Salamanca Market at a glance
Salamanca Market takes place on Saturdays on Salamanca Place on the Hobart waterfront. The market is a city council market with about 300 stalls. Expect crowds, especially around midday.
The market runs in the rain. That matters in Hobart, where rain falls in every month on average. Bring a jacket and keep plans flexible, but do not skip the market because the forecast is grey.

Saturday timetable
The times that shape a market morning.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 05:30 | Parking ban starts at Salamanca Place and the Tasman Fountain area |

If a Saturday falls on Christmas Day or Anzac Day, the market follows different arrangements. Check the market's notices for that date before you plan around it.

Getting there and parking
The easiest way is on foot from a waterfront or Battery Point stay. Salamanca Place is the market location, and the sandstone warehouses along it make the setting, as the photo shows. If you drive, know that the market area is a tow-away zone: vehicles left in the ban area on Saturday between 05:30 and 18:00 can be towed.
Hobart City Council also runs car parks elsewhere in the centre. One of them is the Argyle Street Car Park at 38 Argyle Street, open daily 06:30 to 22:00. Its tariff tiers are A$6 for 1 to 2 hours, A$10 for 2 to 3 hours and A$13 for 3 to 4 hours, with the first hour free and A$27 from 8 hours. These tiers are total amounts, not hourly rates that you add together. Sunday and holiday rules differ, so read the tariff board for Saturday on arrival, and check how far the walk is on a map.
If you stay near Salamanca, ask your accommodation whether parking is included. Our where to stay page explains the areas.

Making the most of the morning
A few practical ideas, none of which needs a booking.
Arrive early or late
The market opens at 08:30 and closes at 15:00. The lanes between the stalls fill up in the middle of the day. An early start or a late-morning visit makes walking easier.
Walk on to Battery Point
Battery Point lies close to the waterfront. The city describes a Battery Point Sculpture Trail with 9 large number sculptures that tell the history of the area. Look for the trail on a map before you set out.
Add a museum
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is within walking distance of the waterfront. General entry is free. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00 from 1 April to 24 December, and daily from 10:00 to 16:00 from 26 December to 31 March. It is closed on Good Friday, Anzac Day and Christmas Day.
Plan the ferry to MONA
MONA ferries leave from Brooke Street Pier on the waterfront. Read the MONA page for the timetable and ticket details. MONA's regular opening days are Thursday to Monday, so a Saturday works well.
What to wear on a market Saturday
Hobart's climate is mild but changeable. Average daily highs in the city are 21.8 °C in January and February, and 11.9 °C in July. Average lows fall to 4.7 °C in July. Summer in Tasmania runs from December to February, winter from June to August. Rain falls in every month, with monthly averages between 38.6 mm and 62.0 mm, and the market goes ahead when it does. These figures come from the Bureau of Meteorology station at Ellerslie Road and describe the city, not the mountain behind it.
In winter, wear layers and warm shoes, because you stand and walk outside for hours. In summer, bring a hat and water. More monthly detail is on our Hobart weather page.
