MONA in brief

MONA is the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart. It runs its own museum and its own ferry service, so a visit depends on two timetables, not one. The regular opening days are Thursday to Monday, from 10:00 to 17:00. Tuesday and Wednesday are outside that regular schedule, so check the ticket page before you plan a midweek visit.

This is an independent guide. It is not run by MONA and has no link to the museum. Prices are in Australian dollars (A$) and come from the museum's published 2026 information.

Check the ticket page for the price on the day you book, because the change takes effect on 22 October. Most advance bookings carry a booking fee of A$3.50 per transaction. A basket that holds only free Tasmanian tickets has no fee. MONA is cashless, and some individual artworks cost extra on top of general entry. Booking ahead is recommended.

The Derwent River seen from the ferry leaving MONA

The MONA ferry from Brooke Street Pier

The ferry leaves from Brooke Street Pier on the Hobart waterfront and takes about 30 minutes each way. The advertised price starts at A$30. The ferry FAQ lists the return at the same price as a single trip. There are no concessions, and children under 4 travel free with a ticket. Museum entry is a separate ticket.

Be sure you are at the right pier. Brooke Street Pier is for MONA. The Bruny Island car ferry leaves from Kettering, and the Maria Island ferry leaves from Triabunna.

Current departures from the pier

The published departures are 09:15, 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 13:15, 14:15, 15:30 and 16:30. A different summer timetable is announced from 3 December 2026, with a peak period running to 29 March 2027, so do not use the October times for a December trip. Posh Pit is a separate ferry class. Ask the operator for its current price.

The 99 steps

The museum has 99 steps. If you need a route with fewer barriers, the operator offers tunnel access. Tell the crew on board.

Plan your MONA visit

Four practical points.

Book the day, then the time

Pick one of the opening days first. The museum is open Thursday to Monday, and a midweek date may not fit the regular schedule. Then choose a ferry departure that leaves you enough hours inside, and check the return options when you book.

Bring proof for any discount

Concession and Tasmanian tickets need proof at the door. Carry the card or the identification listed above.

Watch for two dates

The ticket prices change on 22 October 2026, and the ferry moves to a different summer timetable on 3 December 2026. If your visit falls near either date, check the museum's ticket page and the ferry page again a few days before you go.

Pay by card

MONA does not take cash. Add a little room in your budget for individual artworks that carry their own charge.

Combine it with the waterfront

Brooke Street Pier is on the Hobart waterfront, so MONA pairs well with a waterfront walk. On a Saturday, the Salamanca Market runs from 8:30 to 15:00. Check the ferry times before you plan both in one day.

Festivals: Dark Mofo and Mona Foma

Two festival names appear on MONA's pages.

Dark Mofo

Dark Mofo is a June festival. The 2026 program included Dark Park on 11 to 14 June and 18 to 21 June, each day from 16:00 to 21:00. Those dates are past. Check the festival's own announcements for the next edition before you plan around it.

Mona Foma

MONA now describes Mona Foma as a former summer festival. Do not plan a summer trip around it.
