From Hobart Airport into the city

Hobart Airport has a bus, taxi, rideshare and car hire. If you arrive without a car, the SkyBus Hobart Express is the simple choice. It runs daily to meet the main scheduled flights, and you do not reserve a date or time. You turn up, buy a ticket and board. The average trip takes 30 minutes.

The bus leaves from outside Arrivals at Gate 1, to the right of the yellow waiting shelter. You can buy tickets online, at the counter by the car hire desks or from the driver.

The stop change since September 2026

One stop was dropped, so older directions may be out of date.

Old Woolstore, Stop 6

This stop has not been served since 6 September 2026.

Use Hotel Grand Chancellor, Stop 1

The replacement is Stop 1 in Campbell Street. Check the current stop list on the SkyBus timetable before you book, because some older pages still show the previous number of stops.

Timetable

The bus is planned around scheduled flights. Check the current timetable for your arrival time rather than assuming a regular half-hour service.

Taxi, rideshare and car hire

The airport publishes information on taxis, rideshare and car hire. This guide gives no fixed taxi or rideshare fare and no car hire day rate, because those change. Ask for an estimate when you book or board.

Car hire pays off if you plan several day trips. Terms differ between companies. At least one rental company allows its cars on the Bruny Island ferry, but its contract refers to prohibited roads, and a car is not allowed on a road closed or washed out by weather. Read the section on prohibited roads before you sign and ask whether the Cape Bruny Lighthouse gravel road is covered.

If you only plan to stay in the centre, you may not need a car at all. The where to stay guide compares areas by how you travel.

Public transport and the Spirit of Tasmania

Two things that are often mixed up with the airport trip.

Free public transport

The Tasmanian government makes general public bus services and Derwent ferries free, and the park authority says this runs to June 2027. This does not cover the SkyBus or the Bruny Island ferry, so you still pay for both.

Buses to Fern Tree

Metro route 448 runs on weekdays and route 449 on weekends and public holidays from Franklin Square to Fern Tree. It does not replace the shuttle to the summit.

The Spirit of Tasmania

The ferry sails between Geelong and Devonport, not to Hobart. The operator announces that the Devonport terminal moves to 112 Wright Street, East Devonport, from 24 October 2026.

Hobart Airport: frequently asked questions

How do I get from Hobart Airport to the city?

Take the SkyBus Hobart Express from Gate 1 outside Arrivals, which takes about 30 minutes, or use a taxi, rideshare or hire car. The airport lists all of these.

How much is the SkyBus?

In 2026 an adult pays A$24 one way or A$44 return. Australian Seniors Card holders pay A$21 or A$38. Children aged 4 to 16 pay A$6.60 or A$11, paid to the driver by card.

Do I need to book the SkyBus?

No. It is a turn-up-and-go service with no fixed reservation, and you can buy a ticket online, at the counter or from the driver.

Is public transport free from the airport?

No. The free public transport covers general buses and Derwent ferries but not the SkyBus. The Bruny Island ferry is also excluded.

Can the Spirit of Tasmania take me to Hobart?

No. It connects Geelong and Devonport. From Devonport you travel on to Hobart by road.

Do I need a car for day trips?

For Port Arthur or Mount Field, a car makes it easier, because the drive takes 1 to 1.5 hours one way. Tours that depart from Hobart are another way to go. Richmond and Bonorong are closer.
